Troop 54 just completed their annual Troop Leadership Conference. One of the most important characteristics of leaders that I stressed to them during this conference was "Setting a Good Example."

There are seven key ways our leaders (both youth and adult) can set a good example:
  1. Follow the rules and respect the authority that enforces them. If you don't understand the rules then ask first. If in doubt... don't.
  2. Try Hard. Sometimes following the rules isn't enough. Always "Do Your Best"
  3. Take the initiative! Focus on what needs to be done without putting it off until you are forced to do it
  4. Deserve Their Respect. Show good judgement. Be respectful and consider how your actions affect others. What you do is far more important than what you say.
  5. Know your job. Find out what is expected by those you lead and by those you report to.
  6. Attitude, Attitude. Your opinions on almost anything will be noticed by your peers. Some will adopt them because they want to be like you.
  7. Personal Appearance. Cleanliness, proper uniforming, and organized.

Finally I'd like to share with you a poem by Edgar A. Guest:

I'd rather see a sermon
than hear one - any day.
I'd rather one should walk with me,
than merely show me the way.

The eye's a better pupil
and more willing than the ear;
Fine counsel is confusing,
but example is always clear.

The best of all the preachers
are the men who live their creeds,
For, to see the good in action
is what everybody needs.

I can say, I'll learn how to do it
if you'll let me see it done;
I can watch your hand in action
through your tongue to fast may run.

Although the lectures you deliver
may be very wise and true,
I'd rather learn my lesson by
observing what you do;

For I may misunderstand you
and the fine advice you give,
But it's no misunderstanding
how you act and how you live.
